Have a question?
Yes — standard dining chairs sit at around 45–48cm high, which works with most dining tables between 75–80cm. Before buying, check the table height and allow at least 25–30cm of clearance between the seat and the underside of the table for comfortable sitting.
A set of 4 covers most everyday family dining setups and suits tables between 120–160cm long. A set of 6 is better for larger tables or households that regularly host. If you entertain occasionally, buying a set of 4 and adding 2 extra chairs later is a practical option — many ranges are available in matching sets of 2, 4, and 6.
PU leather dining chairs are the easiest to clean and are a practical choice for households with children or pets. Fabric dining chairs feel softer and more comfortable for longer meals, while velvet dining chairs add a more decorative look but need slightly more care. Wooden dining chairs are durable and timeless, but availability may vary by style and season. For everyday family dining, choose the material based on cleaning needs, comfort, and how often the chairs will be used.
Yes — velvet dining chairs work well in everyday dining rooms as long as they are maintained regularly. Brush the pile occasionally to keep the fabric looking fresh, and treat with a fabric protector spray to resist spills. For households with young children or pets, PU leather is the lower-maintenance alternative.
Armless chairs take up less space and slide under the table more easily — suited to smaller dining rooms or tighter layouts. Carver chairs with arms provide more support and work well at the heads of the table. A common setup is armless chairs along the sides and a carver chair at each end.
Grey is the most versatile choice and suits most modern NZ interiors. White and cream create a lighter, more open feel and work well with timber tables. Black dining chairs suit contemporary spaces and are practical for everyday use. Coloured options like green and sage work well as an accent in neutral dining rooms.
Dining chairs for every NZ home
The everyday centrepiece of the dining room.
Most dining rooms in New Zealand are furnished with upholstered fabric chairs, though PU leather, wooden, and plastic options each suit different households and setups.
Four options to suit every home
Each material suits a different priority — comfort, cleaning, durability, or flexibility.
Most comfortable for daily use

Easy clean or classic timber
If cleaning is the priority, PU leather is the more practical option. It wipes down easily and holds up well in homes with kids, pets, or frequent spills. Wooden dining chairs are a durable everyday option that work across both modern and traditional dining rooms.
Space-saving flexibility
Plastic and stackable chairs are worth considering for smaller spaces or where storage flexibility matters.
Seat height & sets
Standard dining chairs sit at around 45–48cm, which works with most dining tables between 75–80cm high. Dining room chairs are available in sets of 2, 4, and 6 — a set of 4 covers most family dining setups, while a set of 6 suits a larger table or a household that regularly hosts.
With arms or without
Armless chairs take up less space and slide under the table easily — suited to smaller dining rooms or bench-style setups. Carver chairs with arms work well at the head of the table or in rooms with more floor space. Upholstered options including velvet and boucle are available across both styles.
